Dual Language Immersion is a rigorous educational program that develops student bilingualism and biliteracy in Spanish and English. Language fluency and literacy – reading and writing – are taught through an engaging curriculum by highly effective and well-trained teachers.
A balance of native English speakers and native Spanish speakers is sought in each classroom, because children often work collaboratively and learn from one another. Students learn while having fun as they progress through their elementary school years, communicating and thinking critically across all subjects in both English and Spanish.
Spanish is the partner language and used equitably as the language of instruction alongside English. English and Spanish literacy helps students develop translanguaging techniques that reinforce academic vocabulary in both languages and help them master increasingly complex concepts in science, math, and social studies.
Both English-dominant and Spanish-dominant students outperform their peers in traditional English-only schools on standardized tests by 5th grade, according to multiple research studies. Students in dual language programs typically develop greater cognitive flexibility and demonstrate increased executive function, better memory, greater problem-solving skills and are better problem-solvers.
Being able to communicate and excel academically in two languages gives dual language immersion students greater self-esteem and linguistic and cultural knowledge essential to personal and professional future advancement.
